Best beaches in Dumfries and Galloway

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2015

From wild Atlantic exposed beaches perfect for surfing and whale spotting to calm tranquil white sand beaches warmed by the temperate water of the Gulf Stream, Galloway has a beach for everyone. Here we list the top 5 ultimate beaches of Dumfries and Galloway to help you find which one is best for you.

5. Mossyard beach, Gatehouse of Fleet

Mossyard Caravan Park

Mossyard beach is a real gem of Galloway. It’s unique twin back to back facing beaches mean you can always have the sun on your face and look out to see. How amazing is that!? It also scores high points for safety and sand quality.

killantringan4. Killantringan Bay, Portpatrick

This is a fully exposed Galloway beach which faces between the gap of Northern Ireland and The Mull of Kintyre making it a very exposed beach. This is a favourite for strolling on a stormy day. Watch the fierce Atlantic swell crash into the beach and enjoy the dramatic rocky scenery  all under the watchful eye of an imposing Scottish lighthouse perched on the sea cliffs above. Would score higher if it wasn’t for its limited tidal access. Check your tide table before your visit!

Port Logan3. Port Logan Bay

Port Logan is one of those special places. It was the set of the BBC series 2000 Acres of Skye. They chose the location for its unrivalled beauty and unspoilt splendour. Anyone who has experienced a mid summer sunset here knows how special this place is. The unique warmth of the west Galloway light at its finest. From the traditional fishing harbour to the wide sand beach, a stroll along Port Logan Bay is a must for any visit to the area.

Ardwell2. Back of Ardwell Bay, Ardwell

A true hidden gem of Galloway. Access is tricky and only ads to the beaches charm. On accessing it for the first time you will be sure you have come the wrong way, then you turn the corner on the bumpy access road and are greeted by an elevated view of one of Scotland most stunning little beaches.

Sections of white sand, greens so bright and intense, a sea of ever changing blues and turquoise. The beauty of this beach is intense! What’s more, you will almost certainly have it all to yourself!

SOL1. Sands of Luce Bay, Sandhead

And here it is number 1 on our list! The ultimate beach in Galloway and possibly Scotland maybe even the world!

Sands of Luce Bay or Luce Bay has got to the number 1 position not just for its beauty and the shear impact of its vastness of immaculate sand (7 miles of the stuff!). It scores highly on facilities with the beautiful village of Sandhead on its western flank. The village boasts all you need for a Galloway beach holiday including the brilliant Tigh Na Mara pub.

It is a sports enthusiasts mecca! The expanse of sand is ideal for kite flying, land yachts and horse riding with plenty of space for families to set up camp and watch the action.

[bctt tweet=”The shallow warm protected waters are the perfect place to swim, kayak, paddle board or try a bit of kite or wind surfing. Fisherman line the shores casting out to hook beautiful Scottish wild Bass.”]

What really sets Sands of Luce apart is its water quality. On a still day the water is as clear as the Gin and Tonic you are enjoying on your beach mat. The geography of the bay means it captures the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and keeps that heat year round. It is particularly pleasant in the late summer when the shallow water are at their warmest. You could be mistaken to think you were in the Med when you look out to the Palm trees of Sands of Luce Holiday Park!

Enjoy the beaches of Galloway!

One thing is for sure, you really can’t go far wrong if setting out on a Galloway beach holiday. Remember to pack you sun cream as the western Galloway coast is amongst the brightest and warmest in Scotland with summer time water temperatures more reminiscent to South Dorset than other chillier coasts of Scotland.
