Glenluce Abbey
Just a 16-minute drive from our touring and caravan park, Glenluce Abbey is said to be one of the most haunted building ruins around our Scotland static caravan park. Nestled near the banks of the Water of Luce, the ruined abbey once played home to Scottish monks. It’s now more commonly recognised as the site of J Maxwell Wood’s, spine-chilling tale of his experience at the abbey in 1911, when he uncovered the remains of Michael Scot, a wizard and alchemist from the 13th century. J Maxwell Wood found Scot’s skeleton standing upright, surrounded by his collection of alchemical books. Legend states that Scot cast spells to lure the plague inside the monastery, saving the local townspeople from the deadly disease.
Dunskey Castle
While most caravan sites in Scotland are surrounded by our nation’s fantastic historic buildings and ruins, none are quite like our very own Dunskey Castle.
This large atmospheric 16th-century castle, built on the Galloway cliffs, has a traumatic history where the Abbot of Soulseat Abbey was imprisoned and tortured. Since that fateful time, Dunskey is said to now be inhabited by a ‘brownie’ or ‘broonie’ – a household spirit or hobgoblin who comes out at night and either helps with household chores or creates mischief and disorder.
With the state that the ruins are in now, you can make up your own mind about how the broonie is feeling about his home when you visit. Just be careful where you go and what you touch!
Scotland's Very Own Poltergeist
If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can visit the ‘ghost tree’, marking the old Ringcroft of Stocking farm, which was tormented by a poltergeist in 1695.
Andrew Mackie’s diaries speak of a strange apparition of a boy who spent months tormenting the Mackie family and anyone who visited the farm. By throwing stones, scratching and attacking people before successfully burning down the house and sheep barn.
It’s said that if the tree, which now stands where the haunted farm once stood, ever falls then the poltergeist will return and wreak havoc once again.
The Ghost Of Bonnie Prince Charles
Built-in the early 18th century, Dumfries’ very own haunted hotel is said to have the conflicted spirit of Scotland’s Charles Edward Stuart, otherwise known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. In his efforts to reclaim the Scottish throne and overthrow the English, Bonnie Prince Charlies was said to have made a pit stop at the County Hotel on the high street. Since his visit, it is said that the prince or another Jacobite haunts the building.
In 1936 a couple staying at the hotel returned to their room to see a ghost dressed in jacobean fashion looking deep in thought and worried. The ghost turned and vanished. Later it was confirmed the ghost was spotted in the room that Charlie was staying in.
The A75 - Scotland's Most Haunted Road
If you’re feeling brave, why not take a trip down the A75 as you travel to Dumfries and Galloway Sands of Luce static caravan park? Running from Gretna Green to Stranraer, the A75 has been dubbed the most haunted road in Scotland. With travellers said to have witnessed eyeless spectres, an elderly man in tweeds and a whole manner of haunting activity in two sections of the 95.4mile long route.
In 1962, the road experienced its most famous haunting sightings as the Fergurson brothers said they witnessed great cats and other phantom creatures, as well as a phantom furniture van, all of which were said to approach the Furgursons brother’s car.
Others have said to see large groups of people walking along the side of the road pulling handcarts and bundles, even believing that they have run over phantom people as they step into the road – only for the bodies to never be found.
