With the ever-popular Wigtown Book Festival just around the corner, thousands of people are starting to get excited and getting ready to go. With a series of programmes designed for the whole family, to the impressive collection of over 200 events and activities, Wigtown Book festival is a must for anyone staying within the local area at our Sands of Luce holiday park this autumn.
Showcasing music, theatre, food and visual arts, Scotland’s National Book Town is now one of the UK’s best-loved literary events and The Guardian even states that the festival is “the sort of festival people become possessive about” – as noted on the Wigtown Book Festival official website.
Here are our top seven events that you won’t want to miss out on at Wigtown Book Festival.
1. An Evening with Pam Ayres
Renowned for her hilarious and wistful insights into the everyday, Pam Ayres is a master at capturing both the joy and unfairness of life.
Ayre’s strong Oxfordshire accent means that you won’t be able to listen to her self-expression through
comic verses and refreshing poetry without having a good old laugh along the way!

2. Bladnoch Tasting Notes
If whisky is your favourite drink, then you won’t want to miss out on this immersive theatre experience. Sharing the story of their Bold Galloway Spirit, prepare to be transported through the distillery’s two-hundred years of history.
From whisky tasting, to drama and fun-filled dancing to live music, get ready to have two hours of non-stop fun (with a series of surprises along the way!).
Sponsored by Bladnoch Distillery, the oldest independently owned scotch whisky distillery, the distillery dates back to 1817 and now has an impressive collection of whiskey flavours, including their Loch Maberry single malt whisky that has warming notes of blackcurrant, ginger and herbal.

Family Rhyme Time
The amazing storyteller, Renita Boyle, entertains audiences across the UK with joyous songs that have previously featured across a wide range of occasions, including bonfires, clubs, camps, country parks, festivals, retreat days and more!
Using a jam-packed range of learning styles, including repetition, rhythm and rhyme that integrates seamlessly with parachutes, puppets and plenty of audience participation, Renita will leave children captivated and wanting more!

4. Wigtown Women’s Walk
Celebrating the lives of women in the town, powerful readings are made by Kriss Nichol and Jayne Baldwin.
Presenting eye-opening stories that concern gender-related issues, this guided walk will mean that you can enjoy fresh air with a group of women who are passionate about female leaders who have made their stamp on history.
Kriss Nichol is renowned for her poetry and short stories, after having appeared in numerous small press magazines and anthologies. Jayne Baldwin is also a writer, bookshop owner and publisher of Des Dillon, Susi Briggs, Lorraine Johnston and Alasdair Hutton.

There are many picturesque walks to be had nearby our park in Dumfries and Galloway, including relaxing beachside walks across Luce Bay beach. You can even walk your new furry friend, one of the alpacas. across the sand as part of our on-site activities!
5. Bookworms of a Book Town
This project exposes the stories, passions and special elements that make Wigtown a retreat for book lovers across the globe. This project involves Karen taking portraits and engaging with Wigtown’s literary community and creative personalities.
The insights and portraits that will have been captured and collated will be added to a book that displays Wigtowns’ vibrant, literary community. With Karen Riches having been renowned as International Pet Photographer of the Year.

6. Hamza Yassin’s Wild World
The well-known British wildlife cameraman and presenter who has worked on a series of exciting shows, Hamza Yassin, is inviting you on a wild adventure into the animal kingdom!
With profound experience in the wilderness and previous years of coming face to face with the most remarkable creatures, Hamza has plenty of incredible stories that he can’t wait to tell about his adventures over the years.

7. Festival Fireworks
Let’s face it, not many things beat fireworks right? Especially when they’re displayed over the beautiful coast of Wigtown Bay!
Feel the adrenaline pumping and heart racing whilst you appreciate the mesmerising displays of colour and light right in front of your eyes.
Make sure you wrap up warm too and take some money for a comforting hot chocolate, as these fireworks will be dancing in the skies for a whole hour.
