Your October Half-Term Family Holiday At Sands of Luce
27 July 2026
The tide’s out, the light’s turning gold earlier in the afternoon, and Luce Bay has that quiet, just-us-and-the-gulls feel that only shows up once summer’s crowds have gone home. If you’re weighing up where to spend October half-term, this is exactly the kind of week we built our park for.
After a few busy weeks back at school, a few days in one of our holiday lets by the beach – or on your own pitch if you’re touring – is exactly what most families need.
Why October Half-Term Here Is Something Special
Seven miles of golden sand at Sandhead, and in October you get it almost to yourselves – sandcastles, rock pools and paddling by day, spectacular autumn sunsets in the evening. Come dinner time, The Lighthouse Bar & Restaurant does proper Italian pizzas and locally sourced comfort food that makes a grey afternoon feel like a treat. And our park itself has plenty going on too: wild food foraging with Galloway Wild Foods, power kiting on the beach, RSPB discovery days, and paddleboarding or kayaking when the weather plays along.
As one recent guest put it:
“This is our 7th year staying at SOL holiday park and we love it! It suits our needs as a family and we have friends who go at same time too. We love the beach and the quick access to it, we love the caravans and the fact we can take our dog too. We can’t leave her with anyone as there is no one so we need somewhere that we can take her and SOL are great!”
That’s the thing about half-term here – a lot of families end up making it an annual fixture. You can read more reviews on our site.
Holiday Let Or Touring Pitch - Which Suits Half-Term Best?
Both work brilliantly for October half-term, just for slightly different families:
- Holiday lets suit you best if you’re looking for a home away from home for the half term holidays. Smart TV, gas oven, integrated fridge/freezer and an enclosed front timber deck mean you can retreat indoors easily if an autumn shower rolls in, then be back on the beach ten minutes later.
- Touring pitches suit you if you’re bringing your own tourer or motorhome – our Dunes pitches are level, gravel, and fully serviced with water, electric and night lighting, so drive-up access stays easy even after rain.
Either way, you’re the same short walk from the beach, The Lighthouse, and the adventure playground.
Local Half-Term Events Worth Building Your Days Around
A quick note on timings – the council usually firms these up closer to the date, so here’s what we know so far:
- Dumfries & Galloway Council’s museums have run free, drop-in family activity sessions during October half-term in recent years – historically Tuesdays at Annan Museum and Thursdays at Dumfries Museum, 11am – 3pm, no booking needed. It’s a great low-cost indoor option if the weather turns, but the council typically confirms the exact 2026 themes and dates closer to the break – we’ll update this once they’re live, or you can check Dumfries and Galloway Council’s what’s on page directly.
- The Wild Goose Festival, the region’s much-loved nature and family celebration, runs every October (it’s spanned dates like 17th – 26th in recent years) but the full 2026 programme is usually only announced at the end of summer. Worth a look nearer the time if you fancy adding a festival day to your stay.
- The Ryan Centre in Stranraer regularly hosts family-friendly touring shows through autumn, including Halloween-themed ones some years – a good one to pair with a swim at their pool if you’re heading into town, though we’d check their events page for what’s actually on before you plan around it.
Make Your Own Half-Term Halloween Fun
We’re open right through until 31st October, so half-term is a great last chance to enjoy the beachside location, on-site dining, and family activities before we close for winter. Pumpkin carving competitions, a family fancy dress afternoon, and a moonlit “spooky” beach walk along Luce Bay cost nothing and the kids remember them for years. If you’d rather book a specific activity slot for the group, our team can help when you get in touch.
Keep an eye on our events page and Facebook page in the lead-up to Halloween, as we’ll be posting the full lineup of spooky activities closer to the time.

Local Attractions Within 15 Minutes
Dunskey Castle (8 miles) has dramatic coastal ruins and some of the best views on this stretch of coast, Logan Botanic Garden (6 miles) is lovely even in autumn thanks to Scotland’s mildest microclimate, and the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (10 miles) marks Scotland’s most southerly point with panoramic views on a clear day. For more ideas further afield, our guides to things to do with kids on a Dumfries & Galloway holiday and fun-filled family adventures on a Galloway touring holiday cover plenty more ground.
What To Pack For October Half-Term
Scottish autumn weather likes to keep you on your toes, so a few extra things earn their place in the car:
- Waterproofs and a warm layer each, even if the forecast looks kind – coastal weather turns quickly
- Wellies or sturdy boots for rock pooling and beach walks
- A torch or head-torch for the evening “spooky” beach walk
- Swimwear just in case – some families still brave a paddle in October
- Fancy dress bits if you’re planning to join in the Halloween fun on-site
